Despite having had a good season, Ian Maatsen has recently returned to Cobham which has understandably fueled speculation over where he will be playing his football in the second half of the campaign.

Chelsea have to play all season without first-choice left-back Ben Chilwell after recent surgery ruled out any possibility of his return. Despite seeking solutions elsewhere, Maatsen’s recall was a possibility.

Robins also hinted that he does not anticipate any contact from the Blues regarding a recall. He added:

“We don’t need confirmation. Obviously he’s with us until the end of the season unless we have a conversation with Chelsea, and there are extreme circumstances, I guess. But from my point of view, we haven’t had any contact with Chelsea, and I don’t anticipate any.

Maatsen enjoyed productive spells with the Chelsea U18, U19 and U23 sides. Even though the young Dutchman currently doesn’t have much experience in the top flight, he is currently very young and has a bright future ahead of him.

Maatsen would still return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season from Sky Blues, but by then Chilwell could well be back for next season. Nonetheless, with Alonso aging and stronger than he was a few years ago, it could offer the youngster a chance to get some first-team minutes in our famous blue shirt.
